Specialized Care for Your Gum Tissues, Supporting Bone, and Oral Health

Healthy gums and supporting bone are the foundation of a healthy, lasting smile. When gum disease, inflammation, recession, bone loss, or another condition affects the tissues supporting your teeth, specialized care can help protect your oral health and preserve your natural teeth.

At Stafford Oral Surgery & Specialists, Dr. Eleni Kanasi provides comprehensive periodontal and implant care grounded in advanced clinical training, research, and individualized treatment planning. Whether you are seeking treatment for gum disease, recession, bone loss, or a problem around a dental implant, our goal is to help you understand your condition and choose the approach that is right for you.

Periodontal Health Is Part of Your Overall Health

Periodontitis — the more advanced form of gum disease, in which the bone supporting the teeth is gradually lost — is one of the most common chronic inflammatory diseases in the world. The World Health Organization has estimated that severe periodontal disease affects roughly one billion people worldwide.

But periodontal health is about more than preserving your teeth.

Research has identified important relationships between gum disease and general health, particularly diabetes. The relationship runs in both directions: diabetes can increase the risk and severity of gum disease, while periodontal disease may make blood sugar more difficult to control. Research continues to clarify how the two influence one another.

Gum disease has also been associated with autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disease and other conditions. An association does not necessarily mean that gum disease directly causes these conditions. But the evidence reinforces an important principle: oral health is part of overall health.

For that reason, periodontal care involves more than treating the tissues around your teeth. It includes finding disease early, controlling inflammation, preserving the structures that support your teeth, and helping you maintain your oral health over the long term.

Dr. Kanasi brings advanced clinical training in periodontology together with her background in epidemiology and oral microbiology to provide individualized, evidence-based care.

What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is the dental specialty dedicated to preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases and conditions affecting the gums and the other structures that support the teeth, including the jawbone.

Periodontists receive advanced specialty training in gum disease, soft-tissue procedures, bone regeneration, and dental implant therapy. They care for conditions ranging from gingivitis and early gum disease to more advanced disease involving bone loss, recession, and problems in the tissues surrounding dental implants.

At Stafford Oral Surgery & Specialists, we combine careful clinical evaluation with advanced treatment techniques to address the underlying condition, protect the supporting structures of your teeth, and help maintain your oral health over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. While many patients are referred by their general dentist, you are welcome to contact us directly.

If you have bleeding gums, gum recession, sensitivity, swelling, loose teeth, or other concerns about your gum health, we can evaluate your condition and determine whether periodontal treatment is appropriate.

When needed, we will coordinate your care with your general dentist.

Your first visit generally begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Dr. Kanasi will review your medical and dental history and perform a detailed periodontal examination.

This may include measuring the spaces around your teeth, evaluating the condition of the gum tissue, assessing bone levels, and reviewing dental imaging.

Dr. Kanasi will explain her findings clearly and discuss her recommendations with you. When treatment is recommended, it is generally scheduled for a separate appointment so there is time for planning and for review of financial and insurance information.

Your comfort is an important part of your care. Periodontal procedures are performed using local anesthesia so that you remain comfortable during treatment.

Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are also available for selected patients. If IV sedation is needed, care may be coordinated with a qualified anesthesia provider.

Some tenderness, swelling, or sensitivity can occur afterward. Your care team will provide instructions based on the procedure performed.

If your procedure is performed using local anesthesia alone, you can generally drive yourself home.

A responsible adult driver is required after oral sedation or IV sedation. Requirements after nitrous oxide depend on the procedure, any other medications used, and the instructions given by your doctor.

Our team will review your anesthesia and recovery requirements with you before your procedure so you can plan accordingly.
